Title:Test your back ups

Description:

Actually happened: About 1988…Consultant to client ‘Okay, make a copy every day, and store in this folder’…hands over a lovely blue A4 folder with 30 floppy disks in nice plastic sleeves inside. Another consultant calls out because there is a problem about 6 months later. So serious, he decides it has to be a restore…’Have you a backup?’ he asks…’Oh yes, right here in the file’…a blue manilla A4 folder is handed over with hundreds of pages of photocopies of floppy disks, and the date handwritten thereon and signed, all lovely and neat and perfect, and absolutely useless!

OK, you have read my other post about what to back up for your GP system, and you’re happy the backup strategy is running away happily. But what about a restore strategy? How do you test that your disaster recovery plan will recover from a disaster when you need it to? Here’s a straighforward way to test.

Take a standalone PC. Install MSSQL from your CD (which you have stored in a safe place with the licence info…right?) . Install Dynamics (from the CD which you have in a safe place etc…).

Go to your back up files and restore your MSSQL Databases in to your new MSSQL install. Then copy the Dynamics GP application folder you backed up and overwrite the one you just installed with it. Re-Create your SQL Logins (more about this later). Launch GP and test. You may need to edit your Dynamics.set file if you were using a shared directory for thrid party product dictionaries, or modified forms and reports dictionaries…or if you installed GP in an application folder named differently from the one on your live system.
